re: Demon Invasions

Demon Invasions are looming ever closer - Blizzard give more details:

There’s a World of Warcraft: Legion pre-expansion patch coming soon, and that means a great number of changes and improvements will be finding their way into the game. We’ve recently outlined several reasons to get ready for it all here and here.

Today, we’d like to take a closer look at the some of the content that will be coming to Azeroth in the weeks after the pre-expansion patch.

Incursions and Diversions

Around the second or third week of August (no later than August 17 globally), after you’ve had time to play around with the patch and get a feel for the changes, some angry invaders are going to start dropping out of the skies over Azeroth.

You’ll be able to identify where the invasions are currently happening by looking at your world map. As quickly as you can, head out to the zone that’s under attack and lend your aid to the defense of Azeroth.

Each demon invasion takes place in four stages, and each stage ends with a reward of Nethershards—and sometimes a chest. That means it’s always a good time to rush out and fight the Legion.

A week after the invasions begin, the Legion’s assault will begin to intensify. Then, a week after that, the demonic onslaught will intensify even more, increasing your chances to complete the event-only achievements Stand Against The Legion (for completing one invasion) and Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions (for completing invasions in all six locations).

Loot Intensifies

When you participate in demon invasions and receive Nethershards, take note of them. Collect enough, and you can spend them on all sorts of transmogrification armor (there will be four ensembles available: cloth, leather, mail, and plate), new pieces for your neck, fingers, back, and trinket slots, as well as the event-only Felbat Pup battle pet, among and other useful items.

Speaking of weapons, you’ll always want to loot the stage 2 and stage 4 bosses in demon invasions, as they have a chance to drop one of 16 event-only weapons, such as Fel Barbed Spear or Hellfury Longbow. At item level 700, these weapons might be more than a transmogrification collection item for you—they might be the perfect thing to pick up and swing at the face of the nearest demon!

Remember to Share

One more item that we’d like to tell you about is a new toy that will be available during the Demon Invasions: the Pocket Fel Spreader. It’s not actually a good idea to leave it in your pocket, but it is a great idea to figure out how to obtain one of these tainted trifles—because this may be your only chance.

For Azeroth!

Blizzard Watch have also posted additional information:

Each invasion event has four stages that require you to complete different objectives — like killing demons or defeating a boss — in an area until a progress meter is filled. None of these are soloable, but we expect large crowds of players will be jumping on them so you won’t have a problem if you don’t have a group of friends available. After each stage, you’ll earn Nethershards which you can use to purchase rewards, including:

At the end of each invasion, you’ll get a chest which may contain one of 16 unique, event-only weapons. You’ll definitely want these for transmog, but at ilvl 700 they may well be an upgrade. Plus you can boost them to ilvl 725 with Coalesced Fel, which can drop from bosses or be purchased with shards. Since they’ll be replaced by your Artifact, we wouldn’t say Coalesced Fel is a great use of your shards, but they could certainly help you through your Artifact quest and be good for off-specs before you can power up a second (and third and fourth) Artifact.

There’s also the new (and somewhat mysterious) Pocket Fel Spreader toy, which will “spread the taint of the Legion.”  Though this doesn’t sound like a particularly good thing (aren’t we supposed to be fighting the Legion?), toy collectors will want to watch out. We don’t yet know how to get it, though it’s implied it won’t come from shards or chests.

Two achievements, Stand Against The Legion (for completing one invasion) and Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions (for completing invasions in Aszhara, Dun Morogh, Hillsbrad Foothills, Northern Barrens, Tanaris, and Westfall), will also be available. There’s also a new Feat of Strength, It All Makes Sense Now, for collecting all 12 pamphlets from your local doomsayers. Though there’s no word on rewards for these yet, we wouldn’t be surprised to if they granted some Legion-appropriate titles.

So get ready, everyone! The Burning Legion is coming.

re: Demon Invasions

Wowhead have gone into more depth about the invasions:

Demon Invasions

Demon Invasions will only be accessible for a few weeks, before Legion Hits.

There are six zones you can encounter an invasion in. Invasions will be available in the Legion prepatch and do not require players to have completed Broken Shore questlines.

Completing one invasion rewards Stand Against the Legion and all six rewards Defender of Azeroth: Legion Invasions. These are Feats of Strength; you only have a few weeks to get these achievements.

Not all invasions will be up at the same time. To see if an invasion is active, go to that particular map and see if the "Under Invasion" text is up, or look on a continent's map.

Invasion Stages

Each invasion is a group scenario with multiple stages:

  • Stage 1: Defend an Invasion Point, like Kharanos in Dun Morogh or the Crossroads in Northern Barrens.
  • Stage 2: Defeat the Demon Commander as well as two lieutenants.
  • Stage 3: Repel the Legion forces around the zone. You can open up your map to see where the enemies are. Progress is granted by killing mobs and saving friendly wounded NPCs.
  • Stage 4: Defeat a boss NPC at the Invasion Point. These bosses are quite challenging, with strong attacks like Flame Fissure from volcanoes or Shadow Gale.

You will be fighting with the opposite faction to take down the Demonic Threat, and some faction leaders may also help out, like Trade Prince Gallywix in Azshara, Marin Noggenfogger in Tanaris, and Muradin and Moira in Dun Morogh. You can hop in vehicles like Demolishers in Azshara and Mechatanks in Dun Morogh to help speed up combat. There are also special objects you can throw to deal more damage, like bombs in Dun Morogh.

Several buffs you can earn during the event are Hero's Resolve and Inspiration.

Nethershards

Nethershards are earned for different parts of the event:

  • Completing Stage 1 rewards 0 shards
  • Completing Stage 2 rewards 10 Nethershard
  • Completing Stage 3 rewards 10 Nethershard
  • Completing the invasion rewards 20 Nethershard
  • For your first invasion you get an extra 10 shards

You can redeem Nethershards at Illidari camps, which are found in invasion zones as well as Stormwind and Orgrimmar.

Rewards

Nethershards are used to purchase special items from camps.

In addition, the  Small Legion Chest and  Large Legion Chest can contain specific Fel-Touched pieces, which are ilvl 685.

The Large chest can also drop ilvl 700 weapons with distinctive models. Players can also acquire  Coalesced Fel, which increase the level of a Legion Invasion weapon up to 725.

There are also some BoE ilvl 700 weapons.

Doomsayers

Doomsayers now populate Stormwind and Orgrimmar, wearing the sandwich boards reminiscent of the cultists leading up to Cataclysm. When you talk to them, you will get a special pamphlet.

There are 12 pamphlets total and if you collect all of them you get It All Makes Sense Now. This is also a Feat of Strength; you can only acquire it during the event.

Dark Whispers

Players in Stormwind and Orgrimmar randomly start hearing whispers. You then get an action bar with 5 abilities as well as 9 stacks of Frail Mind. If you don't want to play, you can simply click the buff off.

You have an ability called Turn Ally that turns a targeted player Hostile. Turning an ally will make a stack of Frail Mind go away but also makes you hostile, so you need to use your Cloak of Darkness to vanish for a bit so you aren't killed. You can disguise yourself as you go around doing this too with Illusionary Guise. You can also confuse a group of players with Hysteria.

When all 9 stacks are removed, you can turn into a Dreadlord for a minute if you use Give In To Darkness.

Strategy: Find locations in cities that are far away from guards, unless your Vanish is on cooldown. If you die to hostile aggro, your progress on Frail Mind will go away.
