I've added a new link into the Game Tools section of this website, to a rather useful website that will show you what type of battle pet you have.

When you capture a new battle pet, they have a fairly obvious "rarity", ranging from poor to rare (currently). However, each of those rarities also have a mixture of three stats ... speed, power and health. Depending on the breed, the points in these could be allocated differently - and the more they are spread around, the less total points are allocated. So a Pet with all its points in speed will have more total points than one with the points shared between speed and health, for example.
