Guild Promotion Rules
We have recently had someone quit the guild because, apparently, he was not promoted fast enough from Pup to Cub. I realise the next lot of promotions are overdue and I do apologise for that - indeed I was intending to do them today, but instead I've had to spend the last two hours trying deal with the implications of this.
Spørgejørgen (the member who quit) sent me a message stating that he had asked in guild about when he should expect to be promoted and he received 3 different replies.
This shows that members are unsure of the rules, and no doubt I'm at fault for not being clear enough.
The basic premise for being promoted from Pup to Cub is that a new member must have been with the guild for at least 2 weeks, and during that 2 weeks they must have been on fairly regularly - enough to know they have potential to fit in with the rest of the guild.
He also stated that he felt the guild wasn't being run "by the rules", he had been forgotten "in the masses" and that guild members "deserve better than that".
It is unfortunate that problems like this often only show up when someone quits - I honestly don't bite and if anyone feels that any of the rules are unfair, or unclear, please feel free to point it out and suggest an alternative. We try to make the rules as simple and as clear as possible, whilst making sense and being fair, but also trying to minimise how much time needs to be spent administering them.
From his message two main problems appear to be obvious. Firstly, that the rules with regards to promotion are unclear and can be read several ways. He is right that the rules could have been taken to mean that as soon as someone hit the 2 week point, they would immediately be promoted. Unfortunately, as there is no automatic system in place, that is never going to happen.
The second problem is simply me ... it takes time to sort out the roster, work out who needs to be promoted, make a list of those people, promote them (and, depending on which rank they get promoted to, their alts as well) and input that information onto the website. It works out at approximately 1 hour total, depending on numbers, and generally needs to be uninterrupted, which is why I tend to try doing it during a quiet time of the day.
Once again, I apologise and I will get onto it as soon as I have the required amount of free time spare - in the meantime I have updated the guild promotion rules to now state that, after 2 weeks in the pup rank, "you will be eligible for promotion", rather than simply "you will be promoted".
